Charter of Ostomate Rights

Helping to Live Life to the Fullest!

Background

The Ostomy and Continent Diversion Patient Bill of Rights has been equated with the Charter of Ostomates’ Rights. The Ostomy and Continent Diversion Patient Bill of Rights is a United Ostomy Associations of America (UOAA) document. The revised version of which was formally adopted by UOAA’s Management Board of Directors in 2017.

On the other hand, the Charter of Ostomates’ Rights, is an International Ostomy Association (IOA) document which was issued by IOA in 1993 and revised in 1997. The most recent revisions were in 2004 and 2007 by World Council, the meeting of delegates representing the member countries of IOA.

The Board of Directors of the United Ostomy Association of Canada (UOAC) adopted the IOA Charter of Ostomates’ Rights. It was first printed in the UOAC Inaugural Conference Program Book, in August 1998 and appeared in subsequent conference program books up to 2008, inclusively, and again in 2014.
