I received a permanent ileostomy in March 2019 and am now receiving the Ontario Assistive Devices Program grant every 6 months. Today I was using a software tax program for my 2019 taxes and I received an alert, from the program, that I may be eligible for a Disability Tax Credit. Until today I had not heard about this tax credit. Is this something for which I should pay my family Doctor to fill out the application form or is it something that an ostomate is unlikely to receive?

As an individual with an ostomy, you are entitled to qualify for the Disability Tax Credit. Ostomy Canada provides valuable information and a comprehensive brochure, available on their website. You can download the brochure in English, and French. You can also call or email the Ostomy Canada office for a printed copy. I highly recommend that you are fully informed with the Disability Tax Credit details before you apply and have your physician sign the form. For further information and to download the brochure go to At the top menu bar, you will see “Financial Support”, click on this. There will be a drop-down menu, click on “Disability Tax Credit Brochure Now Available”. Then, follow the instructions. In no time, you’ll have all of the detailed information that you need to apply and to qualify. Jo-Ann L. Tremblay
