Ann Durkee-MacIsaac – Chair of the Board, Ostomy Canada Society

Ann joined her local Ostomy Chapter in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia following her ostomy surgery in 2002. Over the years she realized that giving support was important in the ostomy world and in 2016 became the Regional Administrator for Atlantic Canada. Representing Atlantic Canada and sitting on the Board of Directors of Ostomy Canada became one of her priorities in her life. During her four year Regional term she travelled to Chapters and Peer Support Groups in the Atlantic Provinces and noticed that the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) was not being applied for nor being discussed as an option. Ann lead the charge to set up a Committee to study the DTC and offer Ostomy Canada’s support to enhance awareness and profile- including the creation of a national brochure and making herself available to talk to Chapters and Support Groups from across Canada to address questions such as who is eligible; where and how do I apply; how do we include the front line professionals such as NSWOCs, Surgeons, Pharmacists, Physicians, and Clinicians? It took time from the beginning but going forward the National office became a central avenue for DTC questions. Inquiries were overwhelming and the success stories were encouraging. Eight years later Ostomy Canada continues to offer support to ensure that people living with an ostomy know about the DTC that CRA offers to people living with a disability. Ann is proud to say that our DTC Committee still exists by staying informed of the changes with new applications, new benefits, as well as advocating for more obtainable certification of the application. On January 18th, 2023, Ostomy Canada Society will present a webinar on the Disability Tax Credit. Ann is pleased to have with her, Rosemary Hill, NSWOC, who has been a member of the DTC committee since its conception and is a huge advocate of the Committee and its work.
