Question:
My husband had an ileostomy for 13 months following surgery to removal rectal cancer tumor. He had a reversal of the ileostomy done in September 2022. We have some questions regarding if there is anything he should be doing as he has urgency and this makes it difficult for him to begin to do activities he used to do. There is no incontinence. Is there any training exercises he should be doing to regain his bowel control?
Response:
I am glad that the ileostomy has been reversed. I would see your family MD or surgeon and ask the following questions.
- Was any part of the rectum removed?
- Will there be issues with the rectum from the surgery?
- Ask MD for a referral to appropriate person to develop a plan for rectal exercises or do you have any suggestions?
