Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP)

The Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) provides limited, temporary coverage of healthcare benefits for specific groups of people in Canada who don’t have provincial, territorial, or private healthcare coverage.

The Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) provides essential, supplemental and prescription drug coverage to all eligible beneficiaries.The list below is an overview of eligible groups for the IFHP and the length of coverage available to them.

  • Permanent functioning ostomy
  • Temporary
IFPH provides 100% coverage for eligible clients.

You don’t need to apply for Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) coverage in most cases. Your refugee status determines your eligibility, and your coverage is activated or cancelled automatically. If you believe you’re eligible, you may need to apply, but your claim was rejected.

Before applying for coverage, make sure you’re eligible for the IFHP.

If you’re eligible, you can apply to:

  • get new coverage
  • extend your coverage
  • Request confirmation of your IFHP coverage if your original IFHP eligibility document has been lost, stolen or destroyed.

A doctor or nurse practitioner must assess clients.
  • Prior approval is required before you purchase ostomy supplies.
  • You must purchase ostomy supplies through an approved vendor (pharmacy, home health care store).
  • Your ostomy supplies are directly billed to IFHP through your vendor.
