Health Services Ostomy / Incontinence Program

Health Services Ostomy / Incontinence Program assists New Brunswick Social Development clients who do not have third-party coverage. The program assists clients with coverage for specific supplies required for managing a colostomy, ileostomy or urostomy, and catheterization or incontinence.

No assistance is provided to the general public otherwise.

Am I Eligible?

Department of Social Development clients and their dependents who hold a valid white Health Card indicating
  • “Supplementary” in the BASIC HEALTH ELIGIBILITY section, or;
  • “O.S.” (Ostomy Supplies) in the ADDITIONAL HEALTH ELIGIBILITY section.
Department of Social Development clients who hold a valid yellow Health Card that indicates
  • a “Y” under the OTH in the VALID ONLY FOR box, or;
Clients must not have any other medical coverage to be eligible for full benefits.

Coverage

The government’s Ostomy / Incontinence program provides complete coverage for residents on social assistance of all ages.

What Products Are Covered?

This program covers supplies directly related to the management of:

  • A colostomy, ileostomy or urostomy
  • Internal, external or intermittent catheterization
  • Incontinence


The following ostomy related items are a few of those not covered by the Health Services Ostomy/ Incontinence Program:

  • Dressings for wounds other than an ostomy site
  • Pouch covers
  • Scissors and stoma hole cutters when not provided with the appliance
  • Wipes – medicated and non-medicated
  • Any products not directly related to the management of an ostomy, catheterization or incontinence

Quantity & Frequency

Ostomy supplies are purchased every month. Maximum quantities per month exist for all products paid through this program (i.e. 20 flanges per month). If you exceed that limit, you will require justification from a health professional to be considered for an exception to this rule.

How to Apply for the Ostomy & Continence Program:

  1. Client presents the application to the prescriber.
  2. Prescriber completes the application and returns it to the client.
  3. Client brings application to Vendor and fills an estimate.
  4. Send the two documents to Health Services for review.
