Question:
I’m in my 60s and live in Ontario. I have a colostomy and use a two-piece, drainable Hollister pouch (70 mm). I’m trying to find a way to keep the pouch dry while showering. Do you have any suggestions for shower covers or other solutions?
Answer:
Thank you for your question. Many people with colostomies look for ways to keep their pouching system dry during showers, and it’s great that you’re exploring your options. There are a few helpful strategies to consider.
1. Showering With or Without the Pouching System
Most people can safely shower with the full pouching system on or completely off. Water will not harm the stoma itself.
However, it’s not recommended to shower with only the wafer/flange on and the pouch removed. Doing so may allow water to seep under the wafer, reducing the adhesive’s effectiveness and potentially shortening your wear time.
Tips for showering with your pouch on:
- Empty the pouch before getting in the shower.
- Avoid directing high-pressure water directly onto the wafer.
- After your shower, gently pat the pouch dry (don’t rub).
- You can use a cool-air hair dryer on low to help dry cloth-backed pouches.
Regarding filters:
Some pouches have filters that require covering while showering or swimming. Hollister pouches are designed so that a filter cover is not needed, but it’s always good to double-check based on your specific product.
If you notice your wafer loosens after showering, you may want to consult an NSWOC (Nurse Specialized in Wound, Ostomy, and Continence) for a pouching system reassessment. You can find one near you at:

2. Commercial Shower Covers
If you prefer to keep both the pouch and wafer dry while showering, you can consider using a commercial shower cover. These products are designed to create a moisture barrier and come in different sizes—including for 70 mm flange systems.
They typically:
- Cover the entire pouching system
- Use elastic or gentle adhesive to stay in place
- Are reusable and easy to clean

You can purchase shower covers through many Canadian ostomy suppliers or online marketplaces like Amazon or Etsy.
