Question:
I am having trouble getting the flange to stay tight. I have no belly button and a result the feces leaks out and ruins the flange. there is a real dip one the one side. I need help to correct this problem.
Answer:
There are several things that can be done. Dips or creases around stoma especially if close to the belly button can cause leakage. Bending and sitting can exacerbate the issue too.
- Cleanse skin with warm water and soap. Pat dry.
- Use strip paste or adhesive strips (depends on company – named differently). They have a plasticine consistency. Take a small piece and fill in dips/creases to level out skin immedicably around the stoma area. Then apply the flange with firm pressure to ensure contact of strip paste and flange – takes like 2 minutes using tips of you hands – the warmth helps to bond.
- If you are sill having leaks then do as above PLUS add a small amount of stoma paste immediately around stoma and then continue with flange application as above.
- Using an appliance belt will also help to improve contact and keep area sealed.
- Contact one or more of the suppliers of ostomy products in Canada – they will be glad to send product for you to try.
