Question:

I’m a 31–40-year-old living in Ontario with a colostomy, and I’m looking for a physiotherapist. I was wondering if there is a list of approved facilities that offer physiotherapy for ostomates. A lot of places don’t even seem to know what an ostomy is. Is there somewhere I can look or someone I can contact for recommendations?

Answer:

Thank you for your question. It can be frustrating to look for rehabilitation professionals who understand the unique needs of people living with an ostomy.

At this time, Ostomy Canada does not maintain a list of physiotherapists who specialize in working with ostomates. However, there are several resources that may help you find appropriate support.

Ontario College of Physiotherapists

  • You can search the public register to verify licensed physiotherapists in your area and review their profiles or areas of focus: CollegeptPublic Register  Â· CPO Portal
  • When contacting clinics, you may wish to ask specifically about experience with abdominal surgery, core rehabilitation, hernia prevention, or pelvic health physiotherapy.

These resources may also help guide conversations with a physiotherapist.

Contact a NSWOC

With the right support, physiotherapy can help improve strength, confidence, and overall recovery. I hope these resources assist you in finding the care you need.
